چکیده

The assessment of the erodibility of soil materials is essential for analyzing and modeling rill, gully, streambed, streambank, spillway, and embankment erosion. A submerged jet−testing apparatus has been developed and used for characterizing soil erodibility in several applications as cited in the literature. The apparatus has been developed based on knowledge of the hydraulic characteristics of a submerged jet and the characteristics of soil erodibility. The test is simple, quick, and relatively inexpensive to perform. The test is repeatable and gives consistent results. The coefficients obtained from the test results can be used in current equations to predict erosion. This article provides a description of the apparatus, methodology, and procedures for conducting jet tests in the field. An example case is also presented to illustrate the use of test results to predict erosion in an earthen channel. The estimated average erosion, for the example case of an open channel test based on jet test results, was 15.7 cm (6.2 in.) and the measured average centerline erosion in the open channel flow test was 14.5

Influence of In-Situ Scaling on Variability of Polluted Soil Erodibility Parameters

Middle and southern Iraq suffers from polluted soils due to crude oil, spilled on land, leakage from transmitting pipe networks, or petroleum products from refineries. Many researchers have studied pollution impacts on the soil in details, but there is a clear lack of investigation on the influence of crude oil on soil erodibility. Recent researches have investigated the influence of pollution ...

Lessons Learned Using Laboratory Jet Method to Measure Soil Erodibility of Compacted Soils

Overtopping, internal erosion, and piping are the main causes of accidents and failures of embankments for dams, lagoons, and levees. A key parameter in the failure of these structures is the erodibility of the soil materials used in construction of the embankments. The soil materials are typically constructed based on compaction specifications. The jet erosion test (JET) has been developed to ...

Spatial Heterogeneity in Aeolian Erodibility: Uniform, Topographic, Geomorphologic, and Hydrologic Hypotheses

Soil aeolian erodibility is the efficiency with which soil produces dust for a given meteorological forcing. Quantifying soil erodibility is crucial for forecasting dust events and the climatological distribution and forcing of dust. We use long term station observations and satellite indices of mineral dust to ascertain the role of regional topography, geomorphology, and hydrology in controlli...

Soil erodibility in Europe: a high-resolution dataset based on LUCAS.

The greatest obstacle to soil erosion modelling at larger spatial scales is the lack of data on soil characteristics. One key parameter for modelling soil erosion is the soil erodibility, expressed as the K-factor in the widely used soil erosion model, the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) and its revised version (RUSLE). The K-factor, which expresses the susceptibility of a soil to erode, is...
